Britney Spears recreates (?) Janet's Control cover + short history of Brit stanning Miss Jackson

Britney is back at her house which she now uses for impromptu photoshoots apparently! She posted pics of her striking a pose against a red backdrop which are quite reminiscent of Janet Jackson's iconic Control cover art. This would not be a reach as Janet has been a long-time influence on Britney's music, performances, and dance routines with Britney herself often speaking about her love for Janet on camera or covering her songs on tour.

Behind the scenes, courtesy of Britney's insta.

https://instagram.com/p/BxBk9p4AvIo

And because this is an informative post take a trip down memory lane and witness Britney's Janet stanning firsthand!

It all started in 1999, with Britney covering a few of Janet's hits on her first headlining tour...

while she also wasn't shy about expressing her love for Janet in interviews

Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation was featured in Britney's 2011 VMA commercial along with another notable influence in her career, Madonna.

And finally just last year Britney was dancing away to Janet's (underrated) track All Nite in the dance studio.

Smash Mouth's "All Star" Found New Life in Memes

$

* "All Star" was released 20 years ago today(!)

* after submitting their album Astro Lounge, the label felt it didn't have a hit single and asked them to write something. Writer Greg Camp took inspiration from his Converse All Stars and wanted to write a song for kids who needed a "pep talk".

* song was a hit. Smash Mouth opened for the MTV Video Music Awards and also had guest spots on the soundtracks for Mystery Men, Rat Race, and Shrek.

* their follow up album flopped, and they were dropped from their label.

* re-purposed as a meme as early as 2009 which then evolved into videos like this:

* previously songs reached "icon status" only by "industry gatekeepers" but social media allows "the listening habits of millions to be documented instead of the ideas of a powerful few".

ONTD, do you have a favorite musical meme? I'm partial to the Mr. Brightside ones myself.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen 15 Years Later

The end of an era ~~~

Or so I'd say if I were half as dramatic as Twitter. Fans are getting all nostalgic about the fact that New York Minute was released fifteen years ago, despite its negative (and horridly correct) reviews. But who doesn't have a guilty pleasure?

Let's start this post off with the twins' MET Gala vintage Chanel #looks, shall we? It's always such a treat to have them out and about on official business.

Once again, Mark Townsend played around with the twins' hair texture. He is seemingly obsessed with it, as they are of his talents.

New York Minute was Ashley Olsen's last gig before she decided to quit acting: "I don't have to be a pretty face. I've done that, but now it’s important and liberating to be on the other side of the lens. I don't like to be the center of attention anymore. It doesn't mean I'm not interested in Hollywood,; I like the way it operates, I like the people who are involved and the sense of possibility. But if I ever get back in, it's not going to be as an actress."
Mary-Kate dabbled in some roles here and there, but she eventually followed suit, stating, "it just felt right to move away."

The appeal of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen has always been their unyielding faith to stay true to themselves. They said they were done with fame - they said it once - and done with fame they were. Unlike many stars right now who are all talk with the way they promote or even slander social media (Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande), or the endless complaints that begin and end with the paparazzi despite always turning to them for promotion (Kardashians/Jenners, Hilary Duff), the twins just don't roll that way. And the best part? They don't shove that fact down our throats, it's merely a conclusion that comes to be when following MKA.

On this day in 1994, Weezer released their first album. Self-titled Weezer, it eventually became to be known as the Blue Album due to its iconic cover. It was produced by Ric Ocasek and has since sold more than 3 million copies.

The band released three singles off the album: "Undone (The Sweater Song),""Buddy Holly," and "Say It Ain't So." Spike Jonze directed the videos for the first two singles, and the video for "Buddy Holly" was praised for its blending of nostalgia and technology by inserting the band into an episode of the TV show "Happy Days."

"Safe Haven" brings us the return of Thrall, aka Green Jesus, as Varok Saurfang asks him to come back and lead the Horde. This comes after Sylvanas, the current warchief, went from "she's not evil she's complex" to "oh no she's just plain evil".

XBXIkOP.jpg
The Horde through half of Battle for Azeroth so far.

After a long wait, the release date for World of Warcraft Classic has been announced the game will be launching worldwide on August 27. Beta opened today.

WoW Classic is replicating the "Vanilla" World of Warcraft experience as it was in 2005. The launch will include all patch 1.12 content, so the full story of the original game will be available for players to complete (meaning you won't need to wait on patches for additional content to be added). The game will run on modern technology, meaning there will likely be fewer bugs than in the original game (such as no being dumped in the middle of the ocean when sailing from Eastern Kingdoms to Kalimdor).

Yes there are dozens of us who still play this game. DOZENS.

So, in case you don't know, the 'Pokemon: The First Movie' was released almost 20 years ago. And the soundtrack is an iconic cinematic piece of music. Managing to put together AH-MAH-ZING performers.

10. Soda Pop - Britney Spears
Yes, the queen of pop was kind enough to borrow her voice (back when she didn't lipsync'd) and Soda Pop is another BOP that could easily be part of her first album.

9. (Have Some) Fun with the Funk - Aaron Carter
Yes, known drug addict Aaron Carter was part of the Pokemon Soundtrack too, back when he was a kid looking for candy. And of course his song is about having fun at a party he's not old to be at.

8. Fly With Me - 98
Before Newlyweds, Nick Lachey was singing Pokemon songs, and it was actually quite good!

7. It Was You - Ashley Ballard ft. So Plush
Ashley Ballard only had one album in her career, but one of her most known songs was part of the Pokemon Soundtrack cause it was a damn good one.

6. Makin' My Way (Any Way That I Can) - Rose Tyler Billie Piper
Yes, Billie Piper, the first Doctor Who companion had a music career before the show and it took her to places cause she gave us this dancing bop that i still listen in my car like nobody's business.

5. (Hey You) Free Up Your Mind - Emma Bunton (Yes, from Spice Girls)
Yes, Baby Spice lend her voice for the Pokemon soundtrack too. (Maybe testing the waters for a solo career?) Well, we know how that ended up...

4. Somewhere, Someday - N'sync
The biggest boy band in the planet (Yes, they are, so deal with it, don't @ me) gave us an amazing ballad for the soundtrack.

3. Brother, My Brother - Blessid Union of Souls
The only song to be featured in the movie. It was the perfect choice for that moment when the Pokemon battle the cloned Pokemon. I've loved this song ever since (til i found out Blessid Union of Souls are fundamentalist christians, so fuck them). They're also remembered for that iconic sad moment in which Pikachu slaps Pikachu.

2. We're a Miracle - Christina Aguilera
Before she became a trashy mess trying to pretend glossy lips are cum, Xtina actually used her amazing talent for the Pokemon Soundtrack, proving once again that all she needs is her voice.

1. Don't Say You Love Me - M2M
THIS IS 90'S CULTURE. I STILL REMEMBER SEEING THIS ON TV AND GOING CRAZY BECAUSE OMG IT'S POKEMON!!!! Yes, i was a stan, even bigger than Jen from Dawson's Creek, probably.

ONTD Original: Pop Singers Singing/Covering Spice Girls Songs

$

The Spice Girls kicked off the first date of their 2019 tour yesterday and reminded us how much they made an impact in the world in the name of girl power, inclusion, people power, etc. and in the music industry itself - with many artists citing the Spice Girls as an influence. Here are some high profile artists who are not afraid to admit the Spice Girls served as an inspiration and had classic, timeless bops.

Charli XCX and Halsey
While Charli is gearing up a grotesque house version of "Wannabe" produced by Diplo, Charli and Halsey had an okay take on the classic at Lollapalooza a few years back.
Charli named the Spice Girls as a big influence countless of times, even cosplaying Baby in her UK semi-smash "1999".

Ariana Grande
Ariana sung a bit of SYBT on her IG once.
When Ariana was quoting Spice Girls lyrics on Twitter, her fans thought she was teasing lyrics from then-upcoming album Sweetener.

SNSD (Girls Generation)
From one impactful girl group to another, Girls Generation performed "Wannabe" while honoring the Spice personalities in their ensembles. Maybe this was a second time they made a tribute to the legends? 2 girl group members became 1 when Tiffany got to meet lead member Victoria in 2016.

Fifth Harmony
Mid-2010s girl group Fifth Harmony also did "Wannabe" for a special performance during Halloween.

Years and Years
Very few lucky people in the world get to sing a Spice Girls tune with an actual Spice Girl, including Olly Alexander of Years & Years with Mel C doing "2 Become 1".

Rita Ora
Rita Ora of hustling-through-cameo-booking-and-various-jobs-in-entertainment fame did a DISRESPECTFUL cover of the Spice Girls, needing to pull out her phone to help her guide to "Say You'll Be There" - the unprofessionalism.

Adele
Another superstar SG fan Adele mentioned numerous of times how big of a fan she was and still is for the girls. She even got the nod from her favorite spice martronly-conservative-baker Geri.

*d Sh*eran
The "Summer On You" songwriter Ed Sheeran did a less popular choice singing off pitch to "Goodbye" with Emma on her radio show she used to host.

Lady Gaga
Another guest of Emma's then radio show, Oscar winner Lady Gaga sang a bit of "2 Become 1" with her and even admitted in the interview that she was once Baby Spice in a talent show. However, some sources say Ginger has been more of an influence on Gaga.

Danish pop singer MØ released an official cover of "Say You'll Be There" which was Mel C approved. The super fan JUMPED out since her debut album, where the music video "XXX 88" featured Spice Girls posters plastered all over the walls. She admitted to having all the Spice dolls in her collection.

A special moment when she got to live her dreams and sung SYBT with her favorite Spice Girl Mel C.

Another special and emotional moment where the two met for the first time at a Swedish award show, where Mel introduced an award for her. MØ is all of us meeting our idols.

LIZ
Underground R&B songstress LIZ (who is NOT OP) did her signature trap-infused cover of the safe-sex anthem "2 Become 1". The legend herself is an avid fan and wishes to open for the girls one day.

Do you now recognize how much of an impact Spice Girls are, still to this day?

ONTD Original: 2007 - A year of one hit wonders, Pt. 2

iPiccy-Design.png

PART ONE

Twelve years ago, artists like Huey, Hellogoodbye and Shop Boyz were topping the charts. Many of the artists who created their major 2007 hits were never able to replicate the success. However, it's always fun to revist the past and remember what we were doing when we were listening to these songs back in the day. This list continues "part two" of our 2000's one hit wonder series. Let's take another look at the best one hit wonders of the year 2007!

CORBIN BLEU - PUSH IT TO THE LIMIT

Disney star Corbin Bleu's "Push It to the Limit" was made to cross-promote the 2007 Disney film 'Jump In!' In late January 2007, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at no. 14 and on the Hot Digital Songs chart at no. 5, with 77,000 downloads. The song peaked at no. 87 on the UK Singles Chart, staying on the Top 200 chart for 8 weeks.

MIMS - THIS IS WHY I'M HOT

So Mims may not technically be a "one hit wonder" but considering that this is his best charting song and based on the fact that he hasn't really put out any music in the last 6 years, he will be included on this list. "This Is Why I'm Hot" reached no. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as no. 2 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart. The song also debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart, selling 140,874 downloads at the time. The success of the song in the United States saw a release in the United Kingdom in May 2007, where the single peaked at no. 18 on the UK Singles Chart.

ELLIOTT YAMIN - WAIT FOR YOU

"Wait For You" debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at no. 67. The song was resurrected by airplay which improved the song's digital sales. It eventually became a hit single on multiple charts in the U.S. It peaked at no. 13 on the Hot 100, giving Yamin his only top 20 hit on the chart. It also became a top five hit for Yamin on the Pop 100, Pop 100 Airplay, and on the Hot Adult Contemporary chart. The song enjoyed great radio longevity, staying in the top ten of Mediabase's Mainstream Top 40 chart for four months before finally falling out of the top ten in early October 2007. The song was the 6th most played song of 2007 on Top 40 radio.

BABY BOY DA PRINCE - THE WAY I LIVE

Baby Boy Da Prince striked at the right time when all the ringtone rappers were hot on radio. His song "The Way I Live" became a success on urban radio and eventually peaked all the way at no. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming a big commercial success.

CRIME MOB - ROCK YO HIPS

Like Mims earlier, Crime Mob doesn't necessarily land in the "one hit wonder" zone thanks to their club hit "Knuck If You Buck" but because this song is their most successful and they have faded into oblivion, it will be included. Also, I had to fill this list with SOMETHING - I used all the good songs on the part one list. Anyways, "Rock Yo Hips" peaked at no. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, no. 8 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts and no. 5 on the Billboard Rap chart.

PLAYAZ CIRCLE - DUFFLE BAG BOY

SO, we were listening to 2-chainz before we were listening to 2-chainz. Although the member of Playaz Circle went on to be a huge success in hip hop, the rap duo Playaz Circle only has one hit as a group. Thanks to a feature from Lil Wayne, the song peaked in the Top 40 of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, reaching no. 15.

STONE SOUR - THROUGH GLASS

"Through Glass" is the second single from the rock band Stone Sour's second album. The song reached the no. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in the US, where it remained for seven weeks, and no. 2 on the Alternative Songs chart. The song also peaked at no. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 after crossing over to pop radio. It remains their most popular song to date.

DOWN AKA KILO - LEAN LIKE A CHOLO

"Lean Like a Cholo" is the first single released by American rapper Down AKA Kilo from his album Definition of an Ese. It debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at no. 93 in May 2007 and eventually peaked at no. 34.

PART ONE LIST:
Shop Boyz - Party Like A Rockstar
Rich Boy - Throw Some D's
Huey - Pop, Lock & Drop It
Hurricaine Chris - Ay Bay Bay
Feist - 1234
Hellogoodbye - Here (In Your Arms)
Aly & AJ - Potential Breakup Song
Paula Deanda - Walk Away
Kat Deluna - Whine Up
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Face Down
Augustana - Boston
Igrid Michaelson - The Way I Am

"This project [No.6 Collaborations Project] actually started with one idea I had. You remember Lady Marmalade, right? This was such a silly idea. I had an idea of doing that. You could get Bruno, Bieber and me on a record. How fun would that be?

"The first person I rung was Bruno and he was just like, 'Let's just do a song together, just us.' And that's how it happened. So then I did a song with Bruno and I did a song with Bieber. These individual songs started happening and it just turned into a project."

The album debuted at no1, is certified multi-platinum and yielded a number of hit singles including If You Had My Love, Waiting for Tonight, Let's Get Loud and No Me Ames.

To commemorate the day, Billboard published a long-form interview with some of the key figures behind the album, who along with Jennifer, talk about how the album and the signature JLO sound came to be, including how actor Tim Robbins influenced the naming of the record!

Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon reunite for EW's Pride issue

Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon reunited to talk about their movie "Bound" for EW's Pride issue.

In Bound, Gershon plays Corky, an ex-con who falls in love with Tilly's character, Violet, the girlfriend of a mobster. Together they plot to steal $2 million and run away together. While the movie was a commercial flop, it soon became a cult-classic.

- Gina's agents encouraged her to not take the role. She was excited to play a character who was the hero who got the girl in the end. She fired her agents to take the part.
- Jennifer says that another studio offered the Wachowskis a lot of money to get the movie, but they wanted to make Corky a man.

ScrawnyNastyDungenesscrab-size_restricted.gif

- Author Susie Bright took Gina to some lesbian bars in LA to prepare for the role. Lots of the lines Corky says to Violet in the movie come from things she overheard women saying at the bars or that women said to her to try and pick her up. Her tattoos were also inspired by many of those women.
- Gina said if she ever wasn't sure what to do she'd stare at Jennifer's boobs and then things came naturally.(OP Note: this should be a lesson for us all)
- Jennifer was nervous about filming the first scene where Violet and Corky kissed, because she'd never kissed a girl before. She went into her trailer to prepare herself, but then Gina showed up at her trailer door with tequila and chocolate, and that helped.
- The rating's board was VERY close to giving the movie an NC-17 rating because, they admitted, Jen and Gina's acting was too good and the love scene seemed too realistic.

giphy.gif

- During the fight scene with Caesar, both Gina and Jennifer got really aggressive and Gina ended up having to go to the hospital because she hurt her ankle.
- Jennifer compares the scene where Violet kills Caesar to the Terminator's "I'll be back" moment.
- Jennifer doesn't think Violet and Corky would still be together, because even though they're really in love Violet's too damaged to be a good partner.
- Gina says this was probably the movie she's most proud of because these two women work together to outsmart everyone and come out victorious without a man's help, and that's not something you see often in movies.
