Mandy Moore gave an interview to Variety recently, in which she discussed the future of This Is Us, her upcoming album Silver Landings (out March 6) and touring for the first time in over a decade. She also addressed her early years as a cog in the teen pop machine—in a decidedly more positive tone than she has in the past.
The 35-year-old singer-songwriter, who once claimed she'd like to refund buyers of her "awful" first two albums, says she's "turned the corner on that line of thinking."
"There are creative choices that I definitely wouldn't make [now]," she told Variety's Chris Willman. "But I don't want to malign how I started and where I came from, because that sweet 15-year-old who didn't know any better is still living inside of me, and she is a huge reason, if not the reason, that I'm still able to do what I love to do."
This sentiment is reflected in "Fifteen," one of the 10 new songs on Silver Landings in which Moore sings: No regrets, with a few exceptions / Every wrong turn, was the right direction / Still a part of me.She credits "the wisdom of getting a little bit older" with softening her view of her career beginnings, a chapter she says she is now developing a scripted television series about.
"When I sit and regale people with stories from that time period, it blows me away sometimes," Moore says. "It in many respects feels like an entirely different person lived that—touring with *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys, and being an MTV VJ, when my friends are going to prom and taking SATs and going to the mall."
