-Back in 1992, a little show called Murphy Brown that starred Candice Bergen had its title character get pregnant and decide to raise the baby on her own after Murphys ex-husband refuses to change his lifestyle and become co-parent.
-The show caught the attention of Vice President Dan Quayle who criticized the show for mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone. He stated "Bearing babies irresponsibly is simply wrong, failing to support children one has fathered is wrong. We must be unequivocal about this. It doesn’t help matters when prime-time TV has Murphy Brown, a character who supposedly epitomizes today’s intelligent, highly paid professional woman, mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another lifestyle choice.”
-The show went on to incorporate the story into the shows 5th season and have Murphy react to Quayle as she is a news reporter.
-With the backlash that Quayle got after his statement, he attempted to take it in good stride by sending a card & stuffed animal to Candice and watched the episode You Say Potatoe, I Say Potato (that mocked him for attempting to correct an elementary-school student's spelling of "potato" to "potatoe") with a group of single mothers.
